MAKING OUR OWN KOAUAU

MAKING A KOAUAU

This week we had the amazing experience of looking at, and listening to some traditional Maori instruments. Poppa Tony showed us how they were made, and produced fabulous sounds with them.

 1.  We were  given a piece of native bamboo, and shown how to mark where the holes                                needed to be drilled.

     2.  After the holes were drilled, we used sandpaper to smooth around the holes, and a file to
smooth the inside of the flute.
     3.  Next, came the decorating. Most of us  made koru patterns.
     4.  Lastly, we tried to produce musical sounds. Some of us were lucky enough to produce a sound           straight away. The rest of us may need to have a bit more practice.
